HALE BREWING: MEET THE BEER

We’re changing up the format of Meet the Brewer events at our bars. We feel that the format is a little tired and has run it’s course for us at six°north. So we’ve decided to freshen things up...

…introducing: MEET THE BEER!

Going forward we will host Meet the Beer events where our guest brewers will present three quick-fire tastings on the night! Each tasting will start with a question and the brewery will answer with one of their beers! We want an approach which encourages customer interaction, giving more of an insight into breweries and the stories behind their beers. Tastings will be free of charge and will be booked on a first come, first served basis.
Meet the Beer. The answer to the question is always beer!

HALE BREWING

The first Meet the Beer events will be with Hale Brewing from London. A small batch outfit brewing some superb beers out of a shipping container in Tottenham!

Hale Meet the Beer events:

six°north Aberdeen - Thursday 21st March
Dynamo Dundee - Friday 22nd March
six°north Glasgow - Saturday 23rd March

We caught up with Hale co-founder Mark ahead of the events…

FIRST THINGS FIRST...YOU BREW IN NORTH LONDON. SPURS OR ARSENAL?

Well Dan is a Big Everton Fan and i'm a Rangers fan, but keep that quiet for the Aberdeen trip. If we had to choose it would definitely be Spurs though.

YOU MAKE AN IRN BRU SOUR...DO YOUR SCOTTISH LINKS GO FURTHER THAN THIS?

I'm actually from Cumbernauld where the main Barr factory is…so i've got legit links to Irn Bru! How do you think we get that flavour??

WHICH ONE OF YOUR BEERS BEST DEFINES HALE AS A BREWERY?

It's hard to say really, we're very proud of some of the mixed fermentation stuff like the wild Mild, but i guess the thing that unites us as brewers is our desire to have fun. For that Girders the Irn Bru Sour has to sum us up the best. I love it when you hand a taster over and people just burst out laughing. Beer's a social lubricant, it shouldn't be too serious.

WHAT'S IT LIKE BREWING IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER?

Shite! Don't get me wrong its been a journey and we've had some really good times, bit it's freezing in the winter, so your trying to wrap under floor heating systems round fermenters and in the summer its the opposite problems. I've lost count of the amount of bruises and scrapes we've had walking into stuff, But we started a brewery with £10,000 and you don't get much luxury with that, But soon we're moving to a proper brewery and i do think the odd day i'll miss the old containers.

HOW DID YOUR RECENT BEAVERTOWN COLLAB COME ABOUT?

Me and Dan have known Logan since Beavertown started at Dukes, He's genuinely one of the nicest guys in the industry and has been very supportive of us, We also know Johhny Hamilton at Tempus and a few other guys up there drink our beer quite regular at five miles. We did extravaganza and i think the combination of our Mali bombs and Me managing to lick both of Logan’s elbows without him noticing took our relationship to the next level. We're really proud of that beer it's complex and balanced and really just a well crafted drinkable beer.

WHAT CAN SIX°NORTH CUSTOMERS EXPECT FROM THE HALE BEERS AT THE EVENTS IN MARCH?

Well... some really good beer for a start. we're bringing some stuff that really shows our creative spectrum as a brewery. There's not many breweries around with a range as diverse as ours, some are ridiculous some are subtle some complex but all good examples of their styles and balanced beer. We might also introduce them to the elbow licking game and the concept of throwing shot glasses of malibu into sour beer.
